8 Simple Rules For Boosting Your Immunity

As a practicing medical doctor for almost 50 years, I’ve seen a lot. What we as a nation have experienced recently, though, is something completely new, even to me. 

Many of my patients are concerned, even scared for their health. As we continue to learn more about this pandemic, it’s become clear that while certain groups are at greater risk (elderly, those with compromised immune systems), everyone is vulnerable, and we all need to take this seriously. 

If you’re practicing safe social distancing, I sincerely thank you. That is by far the best thing you can do for yourself, your loved ones and your community. However, many of my patients want to do more to keep themselves healthy during these troubled times. 

I can tell you this: one of the best things you can do for your health is take proactive steps to boost your immunity. A strong immune system is extremely important to your ability to fight off infections and disease. 

Fortunately, there are some easy steps you can take that will help you achieve that. 

Dr. Sam’s 8 Tips To Boost Your Immune System

1) Wash Your Hands 

You’ve probably heard this one a lot, but it bears repeating because it’s so important. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap anytime you use the bathroom, before meals, when you blow your nose, take out the garbage, etc. This is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of germs. 

2) Get Some Sleep

7-9 hours is the standard recommendation for sleep -- something many people say they simply don’t have time for. Well, with many of us working from home and almost all social activities on hold, there’s no reason you shouldn’t carve out at least 7 hours a night for some much-needed Zs -- especially when it benefits your health so much. Sleep supports the proteins and cells of your immune system to detect and destroy germs and other bugs. And sleep helps your body recognize these invaders next time, so they can dispatch of them faster in the future. 

3) Get Your Exercise 

Yes, I know, the gyms are closed, and you really shouldn’t be outside at all if you can help it. That doesn’t mean you can’t get the 150 minutes of recommended moderate exercise per week. YouTube has thousands upon thousands of home workouts for all skill levels -- many of which require no equipment whatsoever. Research has found that just moderate workouts may lead to a higher number of white blood cells, which fight infections. 

4) Manage Your Stress 

Ever tried meditation or yoga? This could be the perfect opportunity. Stress hormones compromise the immune system. That’s why many of us seem to get sick at the “worst possible time,” because it’s when we have so much going on that our stress levels are too high. Yoga and meditation lower these stress hormones that compromise the immune system, as well as condition the lungs and respiratory tract, which stimulates the lymphatic system to expel unwanted toxins from the body.

5) Cut Down On Sugar

Being stuck inside during isolation may tempt you to treat yourself with sweets more often. Try to steer clear as much as possible. Those white blood cells we mentioned are critical to your immune system, and they are seriously compromised by cookies, cakes and soda. That’s because refined sugar can reduce how white blood cells perform and increase inflammatory markers. Research has shown that people who suffer from obesity have fewer white blood cells, and a reduced ability to fight infection. 

6) Don’t Drink Too Much 

Much like sugary desserts, people may turn to adult beverages more often during the isolation period. An alcoholic beverage every now and then should be alright for most people; however, a drink (or multiple drinks) every day can weaken the immune system and leave you more susceptible to infections. 

7) Don’t Smoke At All 

As if you needed another reason not to light up, here’s one more. Smoking doesn’t just damage your lungs and yellow your teeth -- research shows smoking compromises the “balance” of the immune system, and impairs your ability to fight off an infection. Simply put: don’t smoke, period. Doctor’s orders. 

8) Flood Your Body With Immune-Boosters
